The Years & Years singer will film the BBC special as part of the 'Gay Britannia' season of programmes.

Years & Years singer Olly Alexander is to front a new documentary for the BBC entitled 'Growing Up Gay' as part of a new season of programmes set to air later this year.

The one-off 45 minute special will air on BBC Three online and will explore "why the gay community is more vulnerable to mental health issues, as he opens up about his own long-term battles with depression."

The doc is part of a new season entitled Gay Britannia, marking the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act which decriminalised homosexual acts in private for men over 21, the first major piece of legislation in this area.

According to the BBC, "In the film Olly will join young people on their journeys battling issues that parallel his own - from homophobic bullying to eating and anxiety disorders - and along the way he’ll ask what can be done to address them."

Meanwhile, Years & Years are set to release their much anticipated second album later this year, featuring a collaboration with legendary synth pop band Pet Shop Boys.
